What Is ISO Certification? Meaning, Types, Validity

By PraxisQ Consulting LLP ·

ISO certification is an independent auditor's confirmation that your company runs a management system meeting a published ISO standard — ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environment, ISO 27001 for information security and so on. ISO (the International Organization for Standardization, Geneva) writes the standards; accredited certification bodies audit companies against them and issue a three-year certificate. In India it is the qualifying document for most tenders, OEM supplier approvals and export orders.

What the certificate actually proves

It proves that on the audit dates, your processes were defined, followed and measured in the way the standard requires, and that an accredited third party checked this. It does not certify a product, a person or a one-off result. "ISO 9001 certified" means the quality system is sound, not that every product is defect-free — the system is what finds and fixes defects.

The certificate names the legal entity, the sites and the scope ("manufacture of precision turned components"). Work outside that scope is not covered, which is why buyers read the scope line.

The main ISO standards Indian companies certify to

Over 25,000 ISO standards exist; fewer than fifteen are certifiable management system standards. These are the ones that matter in India:

  • ISO 9001 — quality management; the baseline for tenders and OEMs
  • ISO 14001 — environmental management; plants, construction, logistics
  • ISO 45001 — occupational health and safety; replaced OHSAS 18001
  • ISO 27001 — information security; IT, SaaS, BPO, fintech
  • ISO 22000 / FSSC 22000 — food safety; processors, packers, exporters
  • ISO 13485 — medical device quality; CDSCO and CE route
  • IATF 16949 — automotive quality; tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers
  • ISO 17025 — laboratory competence, accredited by NABL rather than certified
  • ISO 20000-1 and ISO 22301 — IT service management and business continuity

Certification vs accreditation vs compliance

Certification: a certification body audits your company and issues a certificate. Accreditation: an accreditation body (NABCB in India) audits the certification body and authorises it to certify. Compliance: you follow the standard without any external audit — useful internally, worthless in a tender.

So a valid certificate has two names on it: the certification body that issued it and the accreditation body whose mark it carries. A certificate with only the first is unaccredited and is rejected by serious buyers.

Who issues ISO certificates

Certification bodies such as BSI, TÜV SÜD, Bureau Veritas, DNV, Intertek, SGS and dozens of Indian bodies, each accredited by an IAF member — NABCB, UKAS, JAS-ANZ, ANAB. Every accredited certificate can be checked on IAF CertSearch or the body's own register. ISO in Geneva issues no certificates and keeps no list of certified companies.

How long it is valid

Three years from the issue date, conditional on passing a surveillance audit at 12 and 24 months. After three years a recertification audit renews it for another cycle. A lapsed certificate shows as "suspended" or "withdrawn" on the register — the most common reason a bid gets disqualified on a technicality.

Why Indian companies get certified

Four reasons account for nearly every enquiry we receive:

  • Tenders and GeM: PSU, state and central tenders list ISO 9001 (often with 14001 and 45001) as a qualifying criterion
  • OEM and supplier approval: automotive, pharma, FMCG and engineering OEMs require ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 before the first PO
  • Export: EU and US buyers verify certificates on CertSearch before onboarding a new vendor
  • Customers and investors: ISO 27001 is now standard due diligence for any SaaS or BPO contract with data

Is ISO certification mandatory?

No ISO certificate is mandatory under Indian law. Regulators have their own licences — FSSAI, CDSCO, BIS, pollution control consent — and ISO sits alongside them. It becomes effectively mandatory when a customer, tender or bank makes it a condition, which for most manufacturers happens within the first few years of trading.

How it is obtained

Gap assessment, documentation, implementation, internal audit, management review, then a two-stage audit by the certification body. Six to twelve weeks for a small company. The full sequence is in our step-by-step guide to getting ISO certification in India.

FAQ

What is the full form of ISO?
International Organization for Standardization. "ISO" is not an acronym — it was chosen from the Greek isos, "equal", so the short name is the same in every language.
What is the difference between ISO 9000 and ISO 9001?
ISO 9000 is the vocabulary and principles document; ISO 9001 is the requirements standard you certify to. "ISO 9000 certified" in everyday use means ISO 9001.
Can an individual get ISO certified?
No. Companies and organisations are certified. Individuals take auditor courses (lead auditor, internal auditor) which are training certificates, not ISO certification.
How do I check if a company is ISO certified?
Ask for the certificate, note the certification body and certificate number, and verify on that body's register or on IAF CertSearch. A certificate that cannot be found there is unaccredited or fake.
